It's heating up around here

Since the last posting several things have changed.
The biggest .... we have hot water!!!!!
The day the gas was turned on made for one of the best showers ever!!!! The man who came to turn the gas on was one of the nicest people around. He loved Meg! We had put her in the bedroom while he worked and before leaving he asked where his "new friend" was because he wanted to tell her goodbye. It was so sweet to see him love on her.

Along with this sweet picture of our gas man and Meg, we really enjoyed this sight too ... it meant we actually had gas with no leaks, no issues, no concerns, and soon the water would be hot as well!!

We have made some adventures out to explore some more and simply enjoy our time together.
We traveled up the coast to Zuma beach this past weekend and spent the day just relaxing on the beach. The beach experience is much different than back home, the beach is crowded, there are food stands along the shore, large lifeguard stations, but it's still an amazing time. We enjoyed crowd watching and the views are phenomenal! While laying on the beach you are also surrounded by the gorgeous views of the mountains. There is no humidity (which means you don't sweat near as much!) and the sand doesn't stick to you like it does back home. The drive just to get to the beach is amazing; surrounded by wonderful mountains and then the beautiful ocean sneakily appears between mountain ranges and you begin to smell the salt air and you know you're there.... at the beach!

Here, what looks like clouds down below, is actually the Pacific Ocean!

This picture shows people in the water completely enthralled by a group of dolphins that showed up simply to play in the surf!

Vineyards along the drive home from the beach.

Many of you have asked how Meg is doing. She is doing just fine and is her typical silly self. We took her to the dog park the other day as well. She is so funny there. She doesn't like to socialize too much at first and just stays right in our shadows. However, then she will play with some of the dogs, a few are simply too hyper for her liking. She made a few friends by the end of our time there that day. David and I enjoyed seeing the other dogs too, there were some simply beautiful dogs there playing. Of course, after leaving the dog park Meg enjoyed a nice warm bath!!! Meg is a funny thing, as most of you know, but being out here and having to be walked on a leash multiple times a day we have learned some more funny things about her. She does well on the walks and on the streets with the loud noises and all. David said when she first moved out here the loudness would get to her some but she has acclimated to that. One thing that hasn't changed since she moved out is the fact that she does not like manhole covers, sewer grates, metal plates, or grates of any kind in the ground. She will either pick up speed and leap across them or go out of her way to go around them so that she doesn't have to step on them! Oh funny little Meg.

This beautiful girl is named Stella! Had to get a picture with her.

Meg found every small piece of shade there was. Lazy dog.

The communal water bowl was bigger than her ... the one behind her she couldn't even get her head into to drink water. :)

Without saying too much, I hope to have a job very soon and will post about that as soon as I know more. I have had some very positive meetings and interviews in the last week. So, for all your prayer warriors out there, keep the prayers going up! David is also working on some good new projects and possibilities in his job. Things are going well. Thought I would throw that snip-it of information out there for those of you who have helped along the way and for those who have asked and been keeping up-to-date with things.
All in all, we are truly beginning to settle in out here on the West Coast. We definitely miss everyone back home but like keeping up with all of you along the way as well.

More updates again soon.

Settling in on the West Side

Well, this has been a long time coming. After 2,410 miles, 36 hours of driving, 6.25 tanks of gas, an extra quart of oil, some washer fluid, 4 time zones, a lot of laughs, some delirium, lots of pictures, extreme heat and elevations, loading and unloading my car too many times to count, David and I finally live on the same coast, in the same state, and actually in the same apartment!!

We are settling in as best we can in our new apartment. I came out with only what would fit in my car and he doesn't have furniture out here since he's been living with someone else for the last few years. Therefore, we don't have a lot of furniture at the moment. We have been shopping for some couches and things and are waiting to get my furniture sent out from South Carolina. We will get there. For now, it's fun and we are loving it. The biggest hiccup we have encountered so far is the gas company out here apparently has a monopoly on things and are very busy. This meaning that when I called on June 28, or 30 -- I can't remember -- they told us the earliest appointment was on July 12. So, for those of you who don't run your houses on gas, this is what that means. It means we cannot cook on the stove or in the oven, we can't wash clothes (gas dryer), can't wash dishes in the dishwasher because it needs hot water, which, yes, means we have no hot water!!! We have gotten very proficient at the quick showers! I think we could probably win an olympic sport with the speed of our cold water showers. We also met our maintenance crew fairly early on as our AC unit decided to leak (from the ceiling) on our first night. So, night one was spent with the windows and balcony doors open to get some air. Luckily out here it's not very hot at night time. The crew quickly took care of the situation the next day.

Mom rode with me out here. She took over the wheel for a couple of hours when I just needed a little power nap. I drove a total of about 33 hours of the 36 hour trip and mom actually stayed awake with me the whole time. So, naturally, while she was here we went and did some sightseeing so that she could experience a little bit of LA and make that crazy trip worthwhile in the end. We went to the Grauman's Chinese Theatre, saw the stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, took our picture in front of the Hollywood sign at the Kodak Theatre, took her to Santa Monica to see and experience The Pier and put her feet in the cold Pacific Ocean, and had some pretty good meals too.

Mom flew back to SC on July 4. That was the day I was hit with the exhaustion from driving and the time difference. So, after we dropped her off at the airport at 730am I came back and slept until about 330pm. Then, we went over to Rob and Jamie's place for a July 4th get together. It was nice to grill out and have a little bit of normalcy after driving and being out of a routine for so long. It was also nice to get to meet some new people and put faces with names I  have been hearing for so long. That weekend, David had to work some so I actually ventured out on my own some. I met up with our friend Erin and we had a girl's afternoon together which was very nice and very much made life feel a little more settled. To say the least, we are working on getting adjusted to living on the same coast, in the same time zone and actually getting to see each other every day!

Life is definitely different out here but so far I am enjoying it and loving learning new things and getting used to the west coast lifestyle. This first blog is short and sweet but I wanted to get it up and running and I, we, will be updating periodically to keep everyone posted on life out west. So, check back from time to time and see what's happening with the newest Bakers!

Meg found her a spot on the balcony ... perfect spot

Our first home cooked meal in our apt -- thank heaven for crockpots! And yes, those are paper plates so we don't have to try to wash too many things

Again, Meg has found the perfect spot ... she is loving our mess for now.
